John Humphreys (born 22 October 1978) is an Australian economist, commentator and political activist.

Humphreys graduated from the University of Queensland in 1999 with a postgraduate Bachelor of Economics (honours). Since 2010 he has been studying his PhD at the University of Queensland under the supervision of Jason Potts.
He was the founder of the Liberal Democratic Party (President from 2001–2004) and the Australian Libertarian Society [1] and is a significant personality in the Australian libertarian community. He was the author of the Australian Political Quiz.[1]
Humphreys is a Director of the Human Capital Project, a non-profit organisation that offers personal equity financing for poor Cambodian students to attend University.[2]
He has worked previously as a policy analyst for the Commonwealth Treasury, consultant for the Centre for International Economics, volunteer lecturer at Chea Sim Kamchaymear University (previously called Maharishi Vedic University) in Cambodia, academic tutor for the University of Queensland, and a research fellow at the Centre for Independent Studies.
In October 2009 Humphreys (as a Director of the Australian Libertarian Society) spoke at the festival of dangerous ideas on the idea of replacing the government aged pension system with a system of community welfare organisations.[3] Humphreys was also a member of the steering committee for the festival in 2009 and 2010.
He was originally preselected as the candidate for the Liberal National Party (LNP) in the seat of Griffith for the 2010 Federal Election but was later removed by the LNP in unclear circumstances. [4]
